Eligibility Requirements

  • Professional journalists, bloggers, media professionals, and citizen journalists from war zones and crisis areas can apply.
  • Journalists who are being threatened by digital threats in their home countries.
  • The individuals must be eager to learn about digital security and pass the knowledge to other journalists in their home countries.
  • The candidates must show their willingness to return to their home countries.
  • The candidates must be proficient in English.
  • The candidate must have adequate journalistic experience.
  • Applicants are expected to be both able and willing to actively engage in the program, attending all its activities, including the comprehensive digital security training. A commitment of approximately 20 to 25 hours per week during the training period is advised.
  • In the selection process, preference will be given to applicants who serve as investigative journalists, particularly those covering topics such as the climate crisis, corruption, labor rights, or migration.


During the six-month stay, the program comprehensively covers travel costs, manages all visa-related matters, offers a funded apartment in Berlin throughout the scholarship, provides a monthly allowance of 1000€, covers health insurance, and includes public transportation expenses. Fellows engage in an extensive digital security training program with experienced trainers. Additionally, they gain insights into the activities of Reporters Without Borders Germany, a globally-active journalist and human rights organization.
