The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) announced that Direct Entry (DE) candidates who want to get admission into Nigerian universities will now be required to take the UTME (Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination) along with other candidates.
JAMB stated that this new policy is aimed at ensuring that DE candidates can demonstrate the validity of their A’level certificates.
This was disclosed in a statement made available to newsmen in Abuja on Thursday by the board’s Head of Public Affairs and Protocol, Dr Fabian Benjamin, at the end of its management committee meeting.

Benjamin further stated that this change in policy is intended to address all the loopholes that have led to abuses in the DE admission procedures.
He stated that this policy aligns with the board’s continuous endeavors to improve the expansion of the country’s education sector, with a focus on fostering transparency, accountability, and good governance.
This development highlights the board’s strong dedication and resolves to transform the unfavorable perception surrounding A’level admissions in Nigerian higher institutions.
” The board has expressed its commitment to press ahead with its efforts to reposition the conduct of public examinations in Nigeria.
The board declared that the apparent crisis was a result of implementing newly-adopted processes intended to prevent violations in the admission process, taking into account the unique characteristics of our nation.
”This policy is to be situated within the ambit of the Board’s relentless efforts aimed at enhancing the growth of the nation’s education sector as it would promote transparency, accountability, and good governance,” he said.
He further mentioned that the board had once again transferred N2 billion as an interim surplus for the operational year of 2023, stating that additional amounts would be remitted upon the completion of the board’s operations for the year.
This action was in continuation of the commitment made by the Board Registrar, Prof. Is-has Oloyede, and his management team to utilize technology and discipline in effectively managing the board’s affairs.
The statement emphasized that the Board’s dedication and resolve to alter the unfavorable perception surrounding A’level admissions into Nigerian higher institutions were further highlighted.
