The former president of the United States of America has been charged over his handling of some classified documents after leaving the White House.
Trump Charged Over HIs Handling of Classified Documents
He is facing a Espionage Act charge, as well as charges of obstruction of justice, destruction or falsification of records, conspiracy, and false statements, according to his attorney, Jim Trusty, on CNN Thursday. The charges have not yet been made public.
The special counsel is looking into Trump’s handling of classified documents brought to his Mar-a-Lago Florida resort after he left the White House in 2021, as well as possible obstruction of justice and government efforts to recover the material.
The former president wrote on Truth Social that the Justice Department had informed him that he had been indicted and that he had been “summoned to appear at the Federal Courthouse in Miami on Tuesday, at 3 PM.”
“The corrupt Biden Administration has informed my attorneys that I have been Indicted, seemingly over the Boxes Hoax,” Trump wrote.
This is The First Indictment of a Former President
It is Mr. Trump’s second indictment and the first federal indictment of a former president. The Manhattan district attorney charged Trump with 34 counts of falsifying business records in April.
However, the special counsel’s indictment marks a new and more dangerous legal phase for a former president who is running for president again in 2024 while facing criminal charges in two jurisdictions and two additional investigations into his conduct.
The charges against Trump come just seven months after Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed Jack Smith as a special counsel after Trump declared his candidacy, in order to keep the investigation separate from the Biden Justice Department.
Trump will now face federal charges from the special counsel while running to unseat President Joe Biden in next year’s presidential election.
