Early life and education

His mother, Omoba Juliana Oyindamola Adenuga (née Onashile of Okesopin, Ijebu Igbo), was a businesswoman of royal Ijebu ancestry. His father, Oloye Michael Agbolade Adenuga Sr., was a schoolteacher.[7]

Ibadan Grammar School in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria[8] and Comprehensive High School in Aiyetoro are where Adenuga completed his secondary education and earned his Higher School Certificate (HSC). He drove a cab as a means of paying for his university studies.[9] He earned Business Administration degrees from Pace University in New York and Northwestern Oklahoma State University.

Career

  • Early Career: Mike Adenuga started his career in the 1970s, working for his father, who was a schoolteacher. He started as a taxi driver in New York to support himself while studying.
  • Oil Business: Adenuga’s business career took off with the founding of Consolidated Oil, an indigenous oil exploration company in Nigeria. He secured lucrative oil drilling licenses and contracts in Nigeria, which helped him amass significant wealth.
  • Telecommunications: In the early 2000s, Adenuga ventured into the telecommunications industry with the establishment of Globacom (popularly known as Glo), a Nigerian multinational telecommunications company. Globacom quickly gained prominence in the Nigerian market and expanded its operations to other African countries.
  • Other Ventures: Apart from oil and telecommunications, Mike Adenuga has invested in various sectors, including banking, real estate, and maritime services.

At the age of 26, Adenuga sold lace and distributed soft drinks, and that year he earned his first million dollars. He was granted a drilling permit in 1990, and his Consolidated Oil became the first indigenous oil company to discover oil in commercial quantities in the shallow waters of southwest Ondo State in 1991.

In 1999, he received a conditional GSM license.  When the government staged another auction in 2003 after it was annulled, he was given a second one.

In August 2007, he received the African Entrepreneur of the Year award at the inaugural African Telecoms Awards (ATA).

Adenuga made a buyout offer in May 2015 to pay $600 million for the Ivorian mobile telecom company Comium Côte d’Ivoire.
