Solana Imani Lowe (born November 8, 1989), known professionally as SZA, is an accomplished American singer-songwriter. Born and raised in New Jersey, she began her music career in her high school and she self-released her first EP in 2012.

Early Life and Education

Her Solána Imani Rowe, better known as SZA, was born on November 8, 1989 in St. Louis, Missouri and raised in Maplewood, New Jersey, United States. She was born to Christian and Muslim parents. Her father worked as an executive producer for CNN. Meanwhile, her mother also worked as an executive at her AT&T.

Siza grew up with her older sister named Tiffany Daniels. She is the direct older brother of the rapper Daniel, known by the stage name Manhattan. Growing up, she practiced her Muslim destiny and also loved wearing the hijab.

In September of her seventh grade, Siza stopped wearing the hijab after being bullied in a Muslim attack. Additionally, she attended Columbia High School in 2006 and actively participated in athletic activities and cheerleading.

SZA first met the members of Top Dawg Entertainment in 2011, when her boyfriend’s clothing company sponsored Kendrick Lamar’s performance at CMJ New Music Report. Terrence “Punch” Henderson, president of TDE, was amazed at the quality of his early work when introduced to him.

The two remained in touch and after SZA created hype with the release of her two EPs in 2013, TDE signed her, becoming the label’s first female artist. SZA’s early recordings were made with his friends and neighbors, who “stolen a bunch of beats on the internet”. She released her first EP independently on October 29, 2012.SZA released its second EP, S, on April 10, 2013, to generally positive reviews from music critics.

Lemar & Dauley made a music video for the song Ice Moon which she used to promote her film expansion. On July 14, 2013, Top Dawg signed with SZA.In October 2013, SZA embarked on a four-day tour with Swedish band Little Dragon, beginning at the El Rey Theater in Los Angeles on October 17 and ending at the Williamsburg Music Hall in Brooklyn, New York on October 17th.
