Early Life

Tems was born on June 11, 1995 into the Yoruba family of Mr. and Mrs. Openiyi. Her father is of British Nigerian descent, from whom she obtained her British citizenship.Tems, who was named Temirade Openiyi by her parents, was born in the city of Lagos. She is the second child in the family and has an older brother. Shortly after she was born, her Open family moved to England, but her stay there was cut short as her parents divorced. So she and her brother moved back to Nigeria with her mother while her father was in England.Upon returning home, the family first lived in Ilupeju and then moved to Victoria Island, where they lived in Lekki and Aja respectively

Therefore, she has a relatively comfortable upbringing.Tems was raised in a Christian household. During her childhood, she was exposed to many gospel songs thanks to her mother. By the time Tems was 15 years old, she wanted to pursue her music as a career. To make this her dream come true, she took the first step by not listening to other artists. She did this to discover her style so she started making her own music in her own way, and a style was born that fused Arte, Afrobeat and R&B. While in college, she studied sound production and began to master the skill. The goal behind learning this skill is to beat his own songs. His success with Essence paved the way for a collaboration with Canadian-American singer and rapper Drake. She was featured on Fountain, one of the songs on Drake’s Certified Lover Boy album.
