The Ministry of Sports in Cameroon had appointed Marc Brys as head coach of the Indomitable Lions in April, following the sacking of Rigobert Song by Fecafoot for not advancing the team past the 2023 AFCON round of 16.

Eto’o was unhappy that the sports ministry appointed Brys without his approval, so he skipped the coach’s unveiling.

On May 30, a video went viral showing Eto’o blocking a sports ministry representative from entering an emergency meeting he hosted. After succeeding, Eto’o turned to talk to Marc Brys, and their conversation quickly turned into a heated argument.

Eto’o was heard saying to Brys, “I’m the president of the federation. You don’t talk to me like that. I was a coach too. As a footballer, you could never talk to me. You sit down, and we work. Stop this nonsense. You think I could do that in Belgium? I was a coach.”

Brys responded by mentioning Eto’o’s brief time coaching Turkish side Antalyaspor, saying, “Yes, [for] three weeks.”

After more words were exchanged in French, the 62-year-old coach walked out of the meeting, and Eto’o and his team continued their discussions.

Following this incident, Fecafoot released a statement announcing that Marc Brys had been dismissed due to his “disrespectful comments” towards Eto’o and his “outright refusal to collaborate.”

Martin Ndtoungou has been appointed as the interim coach of the Indomitable Lions and will lead the team during their 2026 World Cup qualifiers in June. Cameroon currently tops their qualification group with four points.
