Zenith Bank Plc announced the appointment of Dr. Adaora Umeoji as its new Group Managing Director, effective June 1, 2024. The statement, was signed by Company Secretary Michael Otu and filed with the Nigerian Exchange Limited on Tuesday. Revealed that Umeoji will succeed the current GMD, Dr. Ebenezer Onyeagwu, whose tenure ends on May 31.

According to the statement, “Dame (Dr.) Adaora Umeoji is the first female GMDCEO since the inception of the bank, and her appointment is in line with the bank’s executive transition tradition, succession plan, and strategy of grooming leaders from within.”

Umeoji’s Professional Background and Achievements

Prior to this appointment, Umeoji served as the Deputy Managing Director of the bank since October 28, 2016, bringing nearly 30 years of banking experience, with 26 years spent at Zenith Bank.

As per her profile, Umeoji graduated from Harvard Business School, completing the Advanced Management Programme. And from Columbia Business School, earning a Certificate in the Global Banking Program. She obtained a bachelor’s degree in sociology from the University of Jos. As well as bachelor’s degrees in accounting and law with first-class honours from Baze University, Abuja.

She earned a Master of Laws from the University of Salford, United Kingdom, and a Master in Business Administration from the University of Calabar. Additionally, she holds a doctorate in business administration from Apollos University, USA. Umeoji also obtained a Certificate in Economics for Business from the esteemed MIT Sloan School of Management. USA, and participated in management programs at renowned universities worldwide, including the strategic thinking and Management program at Wharton Business School, USA.

With this appointment, Umeoji will become one of the female bank MDs in Nigeria and the first female MD of the bank.

Zenith Bank stands among Nigeria’s banks with significant assets and is part of the prestigious group of banks with a market value exceeding N1tn.

At Tuesday’s trading close, Zenith Bank’s value stood at N1.19tn, with its shares priced at N38.1 per unit.
