The James Buchanan Fellowship, offered by the Mercatus Center, is granted to recent doctoral graduates in any field. The fellowship is designed to prompt early-career scholars to thoughtfully examine concepts in the political economy of Adam Smith and the Austrians.
Virginia, and Bloomington schools of political economy, as well as their modern implications for issues in the social sciences related to the dynamics and institutional foundations of economic, political, and social coordination.
Program Details
James Buchanan Fellows will spend two weekends and one week residing at George Mason University in Fairfax, VA during the academic year, engaging in discussions focusing on fundamental political economy concepts. Each colloquium will revolve around a series of readings and will feature discussion sessions, lectures, formal meals, and opportunities for social interaction.
The colloquia will be led and attended by Hayek Program scholars, affiliated scholars, and alumni of the James Buchanan Fellowship. Fellows will become part of a network comprising Mercatus students, alumni, and scholars involved in cutting-edge research in contemporary political economy and may apply for conference and research funding.
Benefits
The maximum award of $10,000 includes:
- A stipend
- All necessary reading materials
- Travel and accommodation expenses for attending colloquia organized by the Mercatus Center.
Eligibility Criteria
Scholars who meet the following four requirements can apply and they are:
- Those who have graduated from an accredited PhD programs within the five years prior to their fellowship participation year.
- Individuals with academic roles at accredited universities or research positions at organizations focused on extensive research in social sciences and other fields of science.
- Scholars who can dedicate time to attend two weekends and one week for colloquia during the upcoming academic year.
- Those with research and/or teaching interests that would gain from a deeper comprehension of important writings in political economy.

- A cover letter of 1-2 pages that should detail:
- Your progress in graduate school so far.
- Your academic ambitions
- Your research interests and ongoing projects.
- Your knowledge of the intellectuals linked to the Austrian, Virginia, and Bloomington schools of political economy.
- Your aspirations for what you aim to gain from the program.
- An updated resume or curriculum vitae (CV).
- A compilation of any recent scholarly publications, if applicable.
- A series of concise responses to specific questions.
The assessment process will commence after the deadline, and we anticipate that decisions will be communicated approximately ten to twelve weeks thereafter.
